John Lof’s donation of 17 acres on Willington Hill Road (Rt. 320) in Mansfield may be a seedling for open space in an area that abuts 560 acres of protected land in Willington. Ecological communities need significant tracts in which to survive; this awareness has ignited public and private cooperation to prevent the dissection of undeveloped land. The area around the Lof property contains several large properties in private hands, some of which are in active agricultural use. Willington’s Open Space Conservation Plan has identified this section as a “Conservation Priority Area.”

In addition, the land is valuable in protecting water resources. Natural surface drainage of the Lof property directs flow to the Willimantic River basin. Retired from the UConn Electrical Engineering Department, Prof. Lof has been a long-time supporter of Joshua’s Trust. Although his wife is now deceased, the trail they created through the woods still winds past the maple trees he continues to tap. An agreement with the Trust will allow him to continue making maple syrup. Well maintained stone walls border most of the property, which the Lofs managed for timber.

In recommending the property for acquisition by the Trust, land acquisition vice president Richard Hyde Lof’s gift showed both vision and great generosity.
