"I had known Birge for the past 19 years. I had worked with / for him on many hiking trail projects for Joshu’a Trust the AMC, and CFPA.
A very devoted man when it came to “his trails”. BIrge was a great teacher with a tremendous amount of patience. His easy going style made him an easy man to work for and to learn from. He taught me a lot about trail work, chain sawing, etc.
My fondest memories of working with Birge are probably the trips from Coventry to western Connecticut to work on the AT.
Never a man to use profanity; when things didn’t go just right Birge would usually give out with an “Oh dear !”."

"Birge was the Trust's chief bridge designer and builder for many years. I would hazard the guess that well over half of the bridges on the Trust's many trails were designed by Birge. He also oversaw their construction.
As Birge's health began to fail in recent years, the Stewardship Committee still called upon him for his expertise. We began to furnish him with "director chairs" so that he could oversee the building of his designs while sitting. We will all miss him. "

"Birge was a wonderful and dedicated guy. His death is a real loss for all who knew him. He was a special member of the Trust -- one of the old fashioned kind -- who was just dedicated to securing as much property as possible for the common good, and then making it appropriately accessible to the general public. I am glad to have known him and am sorry we have all lost such a special and important person."
